ARTIST STATEMENT

Capturing landscape images of both real and otherworldly scenes is my main desire. Much of my black and white photography is made in low light conditions. Long exposures help to simplify elements and lessen the scene into key, graphic shapes. Often times, inclement weather such as storm openings, mist, fog, or plain gray sky is considered an asset to help convey mood and spirit.

Black and white digital photography is an instinctual passage for me. In my early photography years, I photographed in black and white using a square format film camera. I appreciate black and white's simplicity of form and light, and although more demanding to make, the square image seems to be more visually straightforward. It contains a natural frame that lessens the need to view the image down or across.

The challenge and discovery in making simple compositional elements in black and white and color deepens my personal meanings to nature. To me nature is like a sanctuary, a place apart. I enjoy capturing those moments that evoke mystery, mood and beauty, and sharing them with you.
